2012 Truckee Summer Orienteering Series

Wednesday evening (6pm) orienteering in Truckee! We'll alternate weeks between a short distance race series and some technical trainings.

The preliminary schedule is below. Venues might change depending on how we like them or how much new mapping I get done.

Race Series

Every other week will be a race, with two lengths of courses. The long courses might be 3-4k, with M21 winning times somewhere between 20-40 minutes, depending on the map. The short course (probably just a shortcut of the long course) might be half that. Both will be advanced difficulty, though with the maps we'll be using around here it can't really get too technical.

The checkpoints will be little pin flags or mini-controls, but no punches. Interval starts. We might even come up with a good way to accumulate series points from the results lists throughout the summer.

Training

The non-race weeks will be some kind of training excercise. Line-O, Control Picking, Corridor Maps, Relocation, etc. Usually the same location as last week's race, so you get more time to play on the map without racing. About the same time / distance as the races.

Details

Cost: $20 for the season, for any number of races/trainings. This will cover printing costs for the maps, and anything left over we'll donate to the US Ski Orienteering team, which will be greatly appreciated.

Registration: by lunch time each event day. Just send me an email that says you're coming, so I know how many maps to print. If I don't hear from you, I probably won't have a map for you.

Any Questions? email me.

Event Details

June 27 - Race: Donner SP

Start off the season with a race in Donner State Park. Park along Donner Pass Rd at the east end of the lake. Start will be just over the wooden fence. 6pm.

Map: 1:5000, 2.5m contours.

Course: 3.0km, 18 controls, 25m climb.

The course goes through almost all clean woods, only a few patches of scrub or thick stuff, so you'll be fine in shorts and running shoes if you want.

July 5 - Training: Donner SP

Moved to Thursday! (because Wednesday is July 4th and it'll be crazy at Donner Lake)

Training set by Carol R, a dogbones-style course, 3.8-4.2km if you get them all. Parking and start along Donner Pass Rd, same as last week. Start will be just over the wooden fence. Carol is setting flags when she gets there at 6, so we'll probably be ready to go at 6:20pm.

Here's what the map looked like. You can get the pairs in any order, but you have to get both controls of the pair in a row. Pair #7 was out because they opened up that campground at 7B this week and it was super busy.

July 11 - Race: Tahoe Donner XC

The second race of the season takes place at Tahoe Donner XC, but in a whole lot of places you've never been before. Knowing the ski trails isn't going to help you too much this time! Park at the end of the pavement on Alder Creek Rd, just before the gate. Start will be from the parking area there. 6pm.

Map: 1:5000, 5m contours.

Course: 3.3km, 20 controls, 60m climb.

The woods are a little junky here, but just thick, not thorns. Shorts are ok if you're tough, pants or gaiters if you want to crash through stuff.

July 18 - Training: Tahoe Donner XC

An advanced compass training event planned by Carol R. We'll also have a white level course set. Same parking as last week. 6pm.

Carol's compass training was four sections, each focusing on a different technique of compass work. And the beginner course was breezed through except for a tricky #7.

July 25 - Race: Boreal East

Head up the pass for some technical forest and open rock. Park at the PCT trailhead at the Boreal Exit of 80. Start will be from that parking lot. 6pm.

Map: 1:10000, 5m contours.

Courses:
Long - 5.4km, 19 controls, 285m climb.
Short - 3.4km, 13 controls, 155m climb.
Beginner - short out and back.

There's not really a good trail loop for a white course, but I'll set some controls for a short out and back along the PCT access trail.

The woods are a mix of thick ferns and wide open rock. Long pants are probably best. And the mosquitos get fierce around dusk.

It was a very tough course this week, made tougher by some unmapped rocks
and cliffs and generally dodgy parts of the map. Race map. But everyone survived and
no one was carried off by the mosquitos.

Aug 1 - Training: Boreal East

Control-pick course set by Carol R. Lots of controls, short legs, with the focus on flow between controls.

map: 1:7500, 5m.
course: 3.1km, 20c

Same parking as last week, 6pm or so.

White pin flags are pretty invisible. Lesson learned. Here's the map.

Aug 4/5 - BAOC Training Weekend - Spooner Lake / Northstar

Info will be on the BAOC website.

Aug 8 - Race: Donner SP

Race number four returns to Donner State Park, which should look easy after the last two weeks at Boreal! Park along Donner Pass Rd at the east end of the lake. Start will be just over the wooden fence. 6pm.

Map: 1:5000, 2.5m contours.

Course: 3.0km, 20 controls. I can also set a beginner course (1.5k, all trails) if there's interest.

The woods here are all clean, so shorts and running shoes are fine.

Aug 15 - Training: Donner SP

Training course set by Jonis, 3.1k, 22 controls. Parking and start along Donner Pass Rd, same as last week. Start will be just over the wooden fence.

Aug 22 - Race: Tahoe Donner XC

Back up to Tahoe Donner XC. I've added a little bit of new area to the map, and the mosquitos are gone up here, so come out and enjoy the run before it starts snowing.

Park at the end of the pavement on Alder Creek Rd, just before the gate. Start will be from the parking area there. 6pm.

Map: 1:5000, 5m contours.

Course: 3-ish km, 20-ish controls.

We'll be mostly in good open woods this time, so shorts and running shoes are fine this week.

Aug 29 - Training: Tahoe Donner XC

Training line-o set by Carol R. Follow the line exactly, and find the six controls (not marked on the map) along the way.

The map, with the answers to where the controls were. Also today's beginner course.

Sept 5 - Race: Boreal

A tough race up at Boreal, while it was getting dark and in a bit of a rain. 2.9km, 15 controls. Here's the map.

Sept 12 - Training: Prosser

Training event at Prosser. Not quite as detailed as the rest of the maps, but still interesting. Carol has some sort of training set for us. There's a bit of scrubby bushes on most of the forest floor, so gaiters or pants might be best on your legs, or just plan on weaving a bit.

Parking and the start are right off 89, a mile or so north of Alder Creek Rd, here (this is at the top of the hill, on the other side of 89 from the OHV trailhead). 6pm.

Today's map.

Sept 19 - Race: Northstar

Race at Northstar, half in the forest and half around some condo developments. Fast running and a few hills.

Parking in the big parking area on the left as you get to the village, in the far bottom corner: here. 6pm.
