2013 Truckee Summer Orienteering SeriesSeason two of Wednesday evening orienteering in Truckee! We'll alternate weeks between a short distance race series and some technical trainings. We'll work out the schedule and venues as we go along, hopefully more than a few days in advance. But in general they'll be on Wednesday nights (6pm) from now until it snows. Race SeriesEvery other week will be a race, with one or two lengths of courses. The long courses might be 3-4k, with M21 winning times somewhere between 20-40 minutes, depending on the map. The short course (probably just a shortcut of the long course) might be half that. Both will be advanced difficulty, though with the maps we'll be using around here it can't really get too technical. The checkpoints will be little pin flags or mini-controls, but no punches. Interval starts. New this year! TruckeeOC club championships! We're going to have three races (sprint/middle/long) sometime this year that make up the club championships. Sprint and middle on a Wednesday night, the long might have to be on a weekend. We'll bust out the sportidents for timing and everything. Watch for this later in the summer! TrainingThe non-race weeks will be some kind of training excercise. Line-O, Control Picking, Corridor Maps, Relocation, etc. Usually the same location as last week's race, so you get more time to play on the map without racing. About the same time / distance as the races. DetailsCost: $20 for the season, for any number of races/trainings. This will cover printing costs for the maps, and anything left over we'll donate to the US Ski Orienteering team, which will be greatly appreciated. Registration: by lunch time each event day. Just send me an email that says you're coming, so I know how many maps to print. If I don't hear from you, I probably won't have a map for you. Any Questions? email me.

This is just before the gravel pit. Start will be from here, 6pm. Map: 1:5000, 2.5m contours. Course: 3.0km The course goes through almost all clean woods, only a few patches of scrub or thick stuff, so you'll be fine in shorts and running shoes if you want.

Start at 6pm at the very end of Alder Creek Rd (past the xc area) here. The mosquitos are out in force, so get some bug spray or just plan to never stop moving! Map: 1:5000, 2.5m contours.
The map. June 26 - Training: Tahoe DonnerAnna's three loop training course. Start at 6pm at the very end of Alder Creek Rd (past the xc area) here. Map: 1:5000, 2.5m contours.

The map. July 17 - Training: BorealDidn't get enough last week? More training, hopefully less breaking of Carol! Map: 1:7500, 5m contours.
The map. We did the big circles in order, with the sets of controls inside in any order. July 24 - Race: Tahoe DonnerGet in your warmup before BAOC's summerfest! I've got a big new section of map to play on. Parking and start at 6pm from the usual spot at the end of Alder Creek Rd (past the xc area) here. And we'll have many visiting dignitaries from Canada you can run against. Map: 1:5000, 5m contours. 3km course.
New attendance record this week, 18 people out on the course. July 25 - BAOC's Sierra SummerfestSix races in five days: three a-meet races, and three casual events. info.
July 31 - Training: Tahoe DonnerSome sort of training on the new section of Tahoe Donner. Parking and start at 6pm from the usual spot at the end of Alder Creek Rd (past the xc area) here. Map: 1:5000, 5m contours.
Dogbones this week: do all the control pairs in any order or direction, but do each pair completeliy before you start another. map. August 7 - Race: Prosser3k sprint race in Prosser. Not the most interesting map ever, but it has some contours to play in and lots of vague open areas. You probably want gaiters or long socks, since its a little scratchy out there. Parking and the start are right off 89, a mile or so north of Alder Creek Rd, here (this is at the top of the hill, on the other side of 89 from the OHV trailhead). Map: 1:7500, 5m contours.
The map. Some of the contours are correct. August 14 - Training: Prosser MTB-O!MTB-O in Prosser. It will be awesome. Map is 1:12500, 5m contours, normal orienteering symbols (not the special mtb-o trail symbols). Course is 7.2 km straight line, 11.2 rideable (the distance along trails). For a map holder you can wear a ski-o one (as long as you never fall), try to attach the ski-o arm (without the base) to your handlebars, or just shove the map in your pocket or up the legs of the bike shorts. Parking and the start are the same place as last week, at 6pm.
It was awesome, and only one flag got stolen. August 21 - Race: Fiberboard FreewayA race up on the top of Northstar, starting on the Fiberboard Freeway. Maps are leftovers from the trailcross a few weeks ago, I'll hand draw on some courses. Course will be 3-4 km, map is 1:10000, 5m contours. Directions: from Truckee take 267 up past Northstar to Brockway Summit (this is the very top of 267). Just over the top of 267, turn right and go up through the little maintenance-looking yard here onto Fiberboard Freeway. It is paved the whole way! If you get on a dirt road you're doing something wrong. Follow the pavement for a mile or so, up a really steep hill, and once it starts going downhill you should see my car somewhere near here. Parking is along the road, just find a spot that gets your car as far off the pavement as you can.
The map is pretty good up there, if super difficult! The course. August 28 - Training: Fiberboard FreewayTraining up on the top of Northstar, starting on the Fiberboard Freeway, a little further down than where we were last week. Hopefully the smoke won't be too bad, but we'll be out there anyway. 3-4 km, map is 1:10000, 5m contours. Follow the pavement for a mile or so, up a really steep hill, down the other side, and there is a gravel pulloff area on the left here, where my car should be.
Not too much smoke at all, we were just above it. The course is a little crappier down there vs last week, but still super tough!
Sept 4 - Training: Fiberboard FreewayBack up to the top of Fiberboard, for a wicked hard mini-boulder course. The course.
Sept 11 - Race: BorealIts getting dark earlier now, so lets get in a little more Boreal before its too dark. 3k course, get there as close to 6pm as you can, since its pretty dark by 7. Map: 1:7500, 5m contours.
This place is so great. The course. Sept 18 - Training: BorealOne more trip up to Boreal for the fall (before night-o!). We'll have a longish course all the way up to the top of the mountain, with a cutoff or two if you want to go shorter. Starts from the PCT trailhead at the Boreal Exit of 80. 6pm. Map: 1:7500, 5m contours.
Sept 25 - Race: Donner SP
Fast sprint around in the snow. Oct 3 - Training: Donner SP
Oct 23 - Sprint: Tahoe DonnerQuick sprint at Tahoe Donner before it gets dark. Be there right at 6, its dark by 6:30 or so. The course will be 2.5k or so.
The course, two of us made it during the day, one had a night-o. Oct 30 - cancelledCancelled - too much snow up at Boreal!
Nov 6 - Night-O: Prosser
Night-o sprint in Prosser, 2.5 or 3 km or so. Its plenty dark by 6pm now, so out with the headlamps and lets go. We'll have some sort of semi-reflective flags out so its not too tough. Parking and the start at the same place off 89, a mile or so north of Alder Creek Rd, here (this is at the top of the hill, on the other side of 89 from the OHV trailhead). Map: 1:7500, 5m contours.
The course.
